Mexico City
On a dark street corner in hip Juárez neighbourhood lies a Oaxacan-style, traditional fonda. While regulars tuck into tacos and tlayudas, guests lucky enough to have a reservation are escorted into the back of the kitchen, where a secret door opens to reveal Mexico City’s first true speakeasy.
Launched in 2016 by owner Walter Meyenberg and now under the watchful eyes of bar manager Gina Barbachano, the team behind the bar present a cocktail programme that showcases the team’s deep knowledge of Golden Era mixology, like the namesake Hanky Panky cocktail (gin, sweet vermouth, Italian digestif) created by the legendary Ada Coleman in her tenure as head bartender at The Savoy hotel in London. The bar’s current menu, Twelve wonders of Mixology, is a liquid travelogue dedicated to transcribing the travels of The Hanky Panky team into cocktails and sips imbued with global favours and techniques. Discover Singapore with Barbachano’s Green City (gin infused with green tea, sake, homemade coconut cream, orange bitters, terebinth essence) or Peru with Martínez’s Otorongo (gin, leche de tigre cordial, homemade banana liqueur).
